Here is a list of the places and things we ate during our 10 day trip in Bali. Our main bases were Kuta and Ubud so that’s where these restaurants are located. And a bonus from Nusa Pendia from our day trip there.
One of the random conversations we had during this trip was how many food review sites like Yelp review a restaurant on more than just the food itself. Restaurants gets extra points for the look-and-fell, friendliness of the staff, fancy bathroom sink. All of those things are nice and are things that I also write about but for this post, I want to focus on the food of the restaurant. When I am traveling, I care a bit less about the look-and-feel of a place and more about the taste. When I am back home, I care a little more about how a place is designed. I should stop that. Should only be thinking about how good the food is.
Couple things we learned while we were in Bali:
“Warung” means “shop”. It was the word in front of most of the local restaurants.
When you order delivery on the Grab app, when the driver accepts the order, they will go to the restaurant, place the order and wait. Unlike Uber Eats back in the States when the order is already sent to the restaurant to prepare. Consider this when an order is taking a while. The restaurant may be busy. This is also money the driver could be making with a different order.
Grab is also the transportation app we used to get around. There are signs everywhere in Ubud to support local drivers and taxis and not to us the transportation apps. We learned about the local mafia and their way of trying to enforce this - more details of this will be in a different post.
Yelp isn’t used here. Trip Advisor and Google Reviews are more commonly used.

Food in Kuta
🐷 Warung Babi Guling Pak Malen
We wanted our first meal of the trip to be a local dish. Babi guling to be exact. Babi guling is suckling pig. Fu has been talking about this months before the trip. I was kind of excited to see how it is different than the roasted pig I like back home.
We found a babi guling place on Trip Advisor but couldn't find place on Google or Grab. We ended up just picking a random “babi guling” place that showed up on Grab and this was it. Turned out to be a good choice! We sat down and two waiters came up to us. They told us they only serve one thing and asked how spicy we wanted it. I remembered hearing Indonesian spicy is spicy so I asked for a little bit. They put it on the side. Good thing! I was sweating and on the verge of tears! 🥵 It was good though. The kind of good that even though my tongue was burning and I was sweating, I still had to keep going.
The dish came with a slice of babi guling, some crispy pork skin, a fried crackling, sausage and some urap - a vegetable mix over white rice. They put the spice on the opposite side of everything on the plate Fu and I had. It wasn’t until we talked about the dish later that they mixed in the spice with the urap for Lo so she was dying of spice.
We had babi guling a couple more times throughout the trip but this was my favorite overall dish. The pork skin had a nice texture and the rice wasn’t too hard. The slice of babi guling itself was too oily for me but Fu and Lo liked it.

This coffee shop was recommended to us by our villa host because it was walking distance from our villa. We stopped by after a hot afternoon out before heading home.
Vietnam drip - came out hot and was pretty bland. Added ice to it and I got water

🐚 Warung Lincak Ikan Bakar Alas Purwo
Fu and Lo got a bag of kerang ashari and kerang bakar from this restaurant down the street to bring one. Kerang are clams.
Kerang ashari - cooked with oyster sauce which reminded me of clams we have at home. We liked this one

🍖 Naughty Nauri's Saminyak
Fu and Lo read about pork ribs that falls off the bones. We arrived around 6:30 PM and was quickly seated. By the time we were leaving, maybe 7:30 PM, there was a line outside waiting to be seated so this is a come early place.
Signature pork spare ribs - didn't fall off the bones super easily like we read about but not bad
Truffle fries - nice and crispy on the outside. Truffle dip was pretty good

They have waffle fries! And spicy chicken! Their spicy chicken is SPICY! They aren't playing around with their spices. It was really good though. Even as cold leftovers the next day. Wish we had this back in the states.

Got the nasa campur - mix sates platter for lunch. Sate is meats on sticks. There were three different types of sate in the meal with a couple of small side dishes. Portion size was a snack when shared between three people. Maybe a meal for one. Overall the food was okay. The sate were sweet from the glaze.
This restaurant also offers cooking classes. It's a four hour class that starts with taking you to the market. The lady who seated us is definitely a sales person. She even offered us a discount for a massage place.

🦐 Rame Jimbaran Seafood
When you look up “Jimbaran Seafood”, you are actually taken to an area where there are multiple restaurants lined up next to each other. You can see some of their seafood selection laid out on ice in front of the shop. There will be people outside telling you to come look at their menu. We randomly stopped at this one and decided their menu looked pretty good. We were also about the miss the sunset if we didn’t hurry and pick a place. I think we picked a good one.
We went through their restaurant and was seated outside on the beach. Every one of those restaurants has beach seating so you can pick any. The view will be amazing but keep in mind there is smoke everywhere coming from all the restaurants. You will go home smelling like smoke.
We ordered the Family Package 1 which included:
500 gr of lobster
500 gr of fish
300 gr of crab
6 pcs of tiger prawns
6 pcs of clam
6 pcs of sata squid
2 plates of water spinach vegetables
Fruit for dessert
We also added a kilo of king prawns.
They didn’t ask us how we wanted anything cooked. They just did their thing. All the seafood was delicious! Mostly all cooked in a thick sweet sauce. The tiger prawns were my favorite. The king prawns were bigger which made the shell harder to chew on. We weren’t a huge fan of the water spinach. The lemon tea was very refreshing. I also couldn’t stop snacking on the peanuts they gave us before the food came out.

We picked this place because it had smoothie bowls. Lo was almost not going to go out with us because we were feeling sick at this point but she saw the pictures of what the place looked like and decided to come.
They have a huge menu! I’m trying to find the details of what we ate online but they don’t have a website. They mostly use Facebook and Instagram. Makes sense because this place would be a place people have on “most Instagramable restaurants” lists.

We came here for breakfast for three days. Lo loved it! She got the Breakfast Butty all three days. I liked the chili bacon jam on the side. It was too sweet for me but Lo and Fu enjoyed it.
Breakfast butty (2x) - bacon steak, fried egg, smashed avocado, roasted garlic aioli, chili bacon jam, hash brown on brioche. They gave a really good amount of avocado unlike most places back home

Eggs Benedict - crust of the sourdough was really hard to bite but everything else was good

Warm banana bread with espresso butter - the slice of banana bread was a bit hard but the espresso butter was really good
Katsu sandwich - Panko breadcrumb fried chicken, BBQ sauce, Japanese mayo, shredded cabbage. Pretty good! Perfect for people who don’t like crust too

Chi-e told us that Pizza Hut and KFC here is pretty different from the states so we wanted to try. However, the closest Pizza Hut was 45 minutes away. I was already craving pizza so we found this place on the Grab Delivery app.
Pizza messicana - tomato, mozarella, jalapeno, parmesan, olive oil. This was a sad sad pizza. Where was the cheese? Where were the jalapeno? It was a tomato pizza with hard bread

Our driver dropped us off here for lunch when we asked for somewhere to eat after a day of exploring. We ordered a coconut and two “specials” which was the usual babi guling dish. The non fried pork here had no flavor.

Don’t be fooled by the name. It’s not only to-go.
Falafel pocket - they used soy bean falafel instead of the usual ground chickpeas. This gave it a less grainy texture which I liked. Their tzatziki with the vegetables in the pita was really good on its own. The tomato salsa threw everything off though. Luckily, that was only in one section of the pita
Prawn sausage - Fu really liked this but I’m not really a fan of seafood sausages/balls (except curry fish balls in Hong Kong). I liked the herbed mayo they had on top though
Reuben - a bit hard with little dressing
Triple fried fries - not as crispy as I thought they would be based on the name

Sat upstairs in the open area with a nice breeze. Fu noticed the menu said "soft opening menu." We asked our waiter. He said they just opened May 5th.
Chia mango madness pudding - why have I not thought about putting smoothies on top of my chia pudding!? New breakfast idea for when I get home. The mango madness was a blend of mangoes, bananas and pineapples. Nice and refreshing
Early burger - the spinach in the burger threw it off a bit but everything else about it was good
Tropical hot cakes - the triple berry puree was good. I also liked the half a passion fruit
Sweet potato fries - the paprika aioli dip that came with the fries were sooooo good! 🤤 We asked if they sold it but they said no. The waitress was going to ask if the kitchen had enough for the day and sell us the rest but they didn’t have enough. She said if we came back tomorrow they would make extra for us but we were heading home that night
Chips and guacamole
Our waiter and the hostess asked us for feedback. At first we just said things were good but they genuinely wanted detailed feedback to help improve their menu. We told them the spinach in the burger was too overpowering and the paprika aioli dip was sent from heaven. The waitress offered us a free cappuccino for the burger feedback. I liked their coffee. It actually had a coffee taste and came out hot.

I didn’t get to go here because this was the day nothing was staying in my system but Lo and Fu went with Chi-e and Nelson. Here is what they had to say:
it was a very large, open-air, pleasant garden restaurant. I had the crispy chicken instead of their famous duck. Turns out chickens are smaller than ducks because my chicken didn’t have much meat on it. Guess it was an organic chicken ! The skin was very crispy and I thought it was good, though I didn’t have any expectations going in. It was served with rice and a some chili sambals on the side including one with pickled red shallot.
Interior was like dining in a garden. open air and very spacious. the duck meal was moderate imo. the duck was a bit dry, even for a fatty bird. better than the duck dinner the previous night, although i do not know what the fuss is about

Copper was fancier than I thought. It had a very pretty and classy ambiance, good for a nice date. Had the service of a high-end restaurant, including asking us if we wanted “still or sparkling water” (and of course it was about $3 for a bottle of either), giving us an amuse bouche of watermelon salad bite, and pineapple sorbet as a palette cleanser!! (I loved the sorbet!) I had the mushroom risotto and it was alright, very truffle heavy.
At cooper roof top the meal was decently priced. the food tasted excellent. I had the pork belly and it was juicy and the skin was crunchy, the app was a tartare that was kinda bland unless you had it with the truffle cream. The portion sizes were decent. bonus points for complimentary bread, appetizers, and sorbet for palate cleaners. Dessert was we had passionfruit 3 ways. panna cotta, flan, and sorbet. had a nice tart finish

Snacks and Thoughts
💭 A bit more about how restaurants are reviewed. I was watching an episode of Ugly Delicious on Netflix when something Ali Wong said made a lot of sense to me. Because it is true. Some places with the best tasting food will not get a high rating because the decor is outdated, because you can see the cleaning supplies in the bathroom or because the staff does not check up on you. They take your order, give you your food and leave you alone. You call them over if you need something. When a waiter/waitress comes and ask “how’s your food” at a restaurant, the response is always “good.” When do people actually say “it’s a bit salty” or “it didn’t come out hot enough.” If something was really wrong you’d call them over.
Anyway! Here are some of the snacks we tried during our trip. I rarely miss local food after a trip but I think I will miss babi guling 🤤
